My Journey
is a fabric mural created by over
100 children. This project was made
possible as a result of a
collaboration between the Children's
Education Center of HFF,
Children of the Future Program of
the Greater Columbus Arts Council,
and the Columbus Museum of Art.
Beginning in
February 2004, students and
instructors began work on this
project. We talked about
different kinds of journeys.
Journeys are trips we take in our
lives. We travel to different
places, with different people, with
different personal belongings.
We travel in different ways.
We looked at
artwork in the Museum galleries.
We examined the textile work of
Aminah Robinson, including
Journeys
and A Street Called Home.
In July, we looked at Jacob
Lawrence's The Migration Series
from the Phillips Collection.
Both Robinson and Lawrence explore
their personal journeys in their
artwork.
The students
sketched their ideas on paper and
then transferred those ideas to
fabric. The textile work of
Aminah Robinson inspired the fabric
people, trees and forms of
transportation. Many students
worked together to paint the
background for the mural.
Jacob Lawrence's bold colors and
simple shapes inspired the painted
background of the mural.
The final
artwork, a large fabric mural,
depicts a busy urban scene full of
activity. People and vehicles
are on the move - everyone is on a
personal journey.
