The children of
The Dowd Education Center are members of a Math Talk
at Home Club, sponsored by Delta Kappa Gamma Society
Education Foundation. Judy McClenahan, Gamma Nu
Chapter President attended a kick-off celebration
recently. The children created a rap song to remind
them of the value of learning math and that math is
everywhere. Ms. Barbara Cleveland, math specialist
at the Dowd, worked with the children and parents
who signed contracts making a commitment to the
program. The students promise to help each other to
see math in everyday activities. The program is
designed to strengthen math concepts. The parent's
promise to help the children with math while at
home.
The Gamma Nu
Chapter awarded a grant to the Dowd Center to
provide the materials for the program. The children
will earn literature-based math materials and
student-designed tote bags to "keep the books handy
and on the doorknob" for easy access and daily
reminder.
Delta Kappa Gamma
International is a society for key Women Educators.
The Dowd Education Center is a program funded by The
Homeless Families Foundation. It was founded as an
all-volunteer organization in 1986 as a
neighbor-helping-neighbor program. The Dowd
Education Center is an after-school program and a
full-day summer program to help at-risk children
maintain and advance in their academic life.
